I have to disagree. I call it preventative umpiring.
If at anytime I think the wrong batter is at bat, I will find out, and have it corrected. That includes hearing it from the bench, Or not recognizing the batter I think should be there. That's why you have lineup cards. I even check my cards on and off during the game just to make sure.
