legal tag of first base by fielder

batter hits grounder to first; first baseman bobbles ball before getting control in glove; she dives and tags first base with the hand not holding the ball. Is this a legal tag or is runner safe?

Why would you consider touching the base with the hand to be any different than touching it with the foot?

Touching the base with any portion of the body, uniform, glove, ball etc while the fielder is in posession of the ball meets the requirements of the rule.

thanks for the reply. That was the call made on the field. The coaches argument that to tag a runner, they have to be tagged with the ball or a glove with the ball in it. He extrapolated this rule to a base tag as well. The umpire stuck with his call which apparently was right. Thanks again

If the fielder has control of the ball (in hand or glove on hand), s/he can touch the base with any part of the body (including hair), uniform or equipment attached to the person of the player and successfully execute any play which requires touching/tagging a base.

Coach needs to do a little reading...

Under the definition of "A Tag", there are two separate definitions. One is for a tag of a runner. The other is for the tag of a base. They are different...no matter how much extrapolating you do!
