D3K situation

R1 on third, 2 outs, 2 - 2 count. F1 bounces pitch and batter swings and takes off for first. R1 comes home and reaches before the play at first retires the batter. Does the run count??

Nope. No run shall score if the 3rd out of the inning is a force out, and the play at first is a force out situation. I different type of situation but still if the BR is put out prior to reaching first base that run shall not score.

Just as applicable...

No run can score when the third out is made by a batter-runner before safely reaching first base.

Technically, the BR at first is not a force out.

Which is where BretMan's quote comes in!

I was not on the field, but saw this happen:

R1 on third, 2 outs, D3K that gets past the catcher to the backstop. F2 runs back to the backstop to retrieve the ball and tosses the ball to F1 at home, but R1 easily beats the throw to score, or so everyone thought. The batter, pitcher, and catcher did not remember the count, and the batter is still standing outside of the batter's box! She tries to step back in, but the umpire tells her that was strike three. Finally, the defensive coach gets his pitcher, who is back inside the circle to throw to first for the final out of the inning. This negated the offensive team's run and wound up making and unconviced coach very unhappy about it (and even more unhappy when he lost his protest fee AND the game by one run!)
