I was not on the field, but saw this happen:
R1 on third, 2 outs, D3K that gets past the catcher to the backstop. F2 runs back to the backstop to retrieve the ball and tosses the ball to F1 at home, but R1 easily beats the throw to score, or so everyone thought. The batter, pitcher, and catcher did not remember the count, and the batter is still standing outside of the batter's box! She tries to step back in, but the umpire tells her that was strike three. Finally, the defensive coach gets his pitcher, who is back inside the circle to throw to first for the final out of the inning. This negated the offensive team's run and wound up making and unconviced coach very unhappy about it (and even more unhappy when he lost his protest fee AND the game by one run!)
