Gotta love fall ball.
Last night, my first game pitted a low to mid level varsity team against a very low JV team. JV team was very obviously in the learning stages of most aspects of the game.
Girl up to bat. Let's call her B3 just for the heck of it, though I really have no idea where we were in the inning when this occurred. Count was 0-2. (She had previously swung on two pitches in the dirt.) Next pitch comes straight across the middle of the plate about belt high, you know, one of those pitches just begging to be hit to the gap. She stares at it. I do my big sell called strike three. Bada bing bada boom. Batter still stands there. I say, "batter, that's three." No response. Me: "Batter. Batter...." (she turns to look at me.) "That was strike three." B3: "Yeah. I get one more, don't I?!"

Holy cow. How do you get to high school and not know how many strikes you get?

Fall ball around here is great - its usually two teams of mixed varsity/jv kids....Sunday morning..... hour and half time limit each game...by yourself. We get -- hold yourself -- 55 a game for a DH (minus our assignors fee) Its casual as all hell, and nobody bothers you. Its balls/strikes/outs, and if some kid goes home early, and leaves a team 'short', the other team will 'lend' an outfielder. Heck, last Sunday one team 'borrowed' a PITCHER! The kids get work, I get work, and everyone goes home happy - and usually early, as the coaches want to make it home in time to watch the NFL!
This Saturday I am going to one where we will play one, break for a bbq (yes, I will get fed ), then play another......you just cant beat this sometimes! I got this twice in September, plus probably two more times in Oct....

Rec league game, runner on 3rd. Pitch comes in high and tight on the batter and catches her on forearm. I call dead ball, batter starts walking to 1st, then suddenly sprints around base and takes off for 2nd. I yell dead ball a couple of times and then just give up and watch as pitcher tries to throw out batter at 2nd as runner from 3rd runs home. I then have to explain to coach why everyone has to go back. "But we do that play all the time!"

Runner on third. Batter walks, runner creeps and stops. Pitcher simply watching the runner on third. BR passes first, runner just stands there. OUT!!!!
Coach: "But blue, she's just doing what we taught her to do!" Me: "Then that out's on you, coach."

Honestly, I think that this was this girl's first time to play. She was on the really low JV team that I mentioned in my OP. Two or three of them looked and played as if they had never been on a ball field before.
