DP/Flex
NFHS rules - The DP can replace anyone on defense any time, any number of times while the FLEX player may replace the DP any time, any number of times.
If DP goes in on defense for any player other than the FLEX, does an official notification need to be made? If the DP goes in for the FLEX, the Flex has "left the game" so a notification to the umpire is made. How many times can the Flex re-enter(not substitution)... For example, can the FLEX and DP swap on defense every other inning? |

As for the Flex & DP "swapping", each player is allowed to be removed from the game 1 time and re-enter 1 time. The positions never disappear from the lineup - when there at the start of the game - so you could swap every other inning IF you have enough players.

DP is an offensive position that can play defense, the Flex is a defensive positioin. The DP can play defense for any player other than the Flex without it being considered a substitution. If the DP does play defense for the Flex, the Flex has left the game, the lineup has dropped to 9 players and it counts as a subsitution for the Flex. The Flex can bat only for the DP, but if they do, it counts as a substitution for the DP and again the lineup has dropped from 10 to 9.
The lineup can change back and forth between 10 and 9 any number of times, however, the players in those positions are still only entitled to 1 reentry each. In ASA ball the DP playing defense for anyone other than the flex doesnt have to be reported unless they playing for the pitcher or catcher. Then you would need to report them in order to use a courtesy runner if you so choose. Last edited by RKBUmp; Sun Feb 21, 2010 at 08:17am. |

Not just for this topic, but many people get confused because of ambiguous terminology.
A player is only allowed one re-entry, but multiple players can hold a position (defense or offense) during a game. The lineup includes the Flex (or EP or AP); but the batting order is only the nine players currently on offense.
