Triple Play yesterday
Just thought I would share this because it's the first triple play that I can remember in a game I was calling and it was kind of weird as well.
HS varsity, no outs (obviously), R1 on third, R2 on first, B3 hits a line shot up the middle. The ball deflects off of the pitcher's arm up in the air and is caught by F4. Both runners had taken a lead when the pitch was released and were running on contact of the ball. F4 throws to F3 for the appeal on R2, F3 throws across the diamond to F5 for the appeal on R1. R1 had already crossed the plate and had no clue what happened. As the third base coach was walking back to his dugout, he tells me, "That's the second Triple Play we have had against us this year."

Smart thinking and sharp play by those girls.
Years ago, the F5 on my daughter's 8U team made an unassisted triple play.

No, though she did go to the finest preschools! She was a pretty sharp, athletic kid, but she also had a LOT of luck on the play. Bases loaded, batter hits a pop fly and all the runners go. F5 catches the fly ball about a foot from her base on the 2B side of 3B, steps with her right foot on the bag, and turns to her left and tags the unaware runner barreling into third from 2B. It was a city parks-and-rec summer team and I never saw the kid again after that. She'd be a HS sophomore or junior now.

That must be where the lotto offered three plays for the price of one.

Isn't it great when you can bang three outs on one play.
A few years ago as a BU I had an unassisted triple play. Bases loaded, no outs. Batter lines one to F5 who makes the catch and steps on third as R1 broke towards home when the ball contacted the bat. After stepping on third base, F5 sees R2 is half way to third base and chases her and tags her out. |

Virginia Union for a long time(maybe they still do) had a 6-2-4-2 triple play on their opening of the local access cable show. I was on the bases and couldn't believe that it was happening. For that team to get a 6-3 out was a feat

Seen some awesome triple plays in slow-pitch, almost ALL at the upper level guys, where someone hits a beeliner line drive to the shortstop and the shortstop has an arm on him as well as some speed. One guy I know actually had a few unassisted triple plays as well as a handful of unassisted double plays in a season in that league. Amazing.
By the way, the lower the level, the less you even see the double play at all. |
