Metal cleats

I made a statement tonight to our Girls fast pitch league president and need to know if it is true. This league has decided to allow the girls to use metal cleats. I told them that there is not a league or tournament in North America that currently allows girls under 18 to wear metal cleats.

How many of you guys have leagues that allow girls to wear metal cleats?

At a recent tournament, we were instructed to "not notice" if a player was wearing metal, and only deal with it if someone complains.

Fortunately, none of the players in any game I called wore metal. Without those instructions in writing, I would have had a hard time "not noticing."

Your league can choose to allow metal if they wish, but I would insist that it be placed in writing.

Remember, ASA rules are a guideline for all play other than championship play, and therefore leagues can use or amend these rules as they see fit. In other words, a league using ASA rules can supercede the rule regarding footwear and allow metal cleats if they see fit. As a matter of fact, there is a league that I work in the fall that is HS age kids that began allow metal cleats last year.

Insurance Concern

...but if a sanctioned league (by ASA or any other org) allows metal cleats aren't they flirting with problems should an insurance claim arise, whether it was a metal cleat incident or not?

I think the way these policies are written, so long as it is a written league rule, the insurance would cover any injuries, lawsuits, etc. Of course, next year the premium might increase!
