NFHS - Metal Cleats?

Someone told me that this year, under NFHS, girls can wear metal cleats. Is that true?

If that is so, can ASA players wear metal cleats, too, or is it just NFHS?

Yes to NFHS and no to ASA. If you call these rule sets, do you not have a rules book for each?

No, I am not an umpire. I help a HS team out here in CA and was curious to learn if there was a new such rule.

Yes. That rule does exist as a rule change/addition this year for NFHS. If you coach, or just help out, you can still purchase the rule books and read them. Back in my coaching days, I studied the rule books, which is kind of what prepared me to become an umpire.

Some states are opting out of the rule, so you'd better check with your state association before you go out an buy stuff (or recommend that players do).

Also, if you're coaching, check the NFHS web site for a document about how college coaches have been preparing their incoming freshmen for using metal cleats. The players will need coaching with them.

We were told:

Rectangle only.. no spike type, no L shaped..

Do not check them..

I will need clarification, I am virtually positive during the presentation we were told.. do not enforce illegal spikes.

I'm only doing tourney ball for NFHS due to work scheduling as far as I can foresee, but I'm interested to see how it goes.

First one I believe is Feb 23...

I don't know how the state association can opt to accept part of the rule but supercede other parts. I don't have my book with right now, but I believe NFHS puts little stipulation on the style of cleat that can be worn, and even clearly includes that the screw in style is acceptable.

Screw in yes..

L or Pointy Spike type.. no. They showed pictures on power point and were very clear on that.

I've done 4 games here and I don't believe I've seen them used. I know I have
not seen a pitcher yet with a toe plate, but that could change.

Four HS doubleheaders so far, involving 7 teams. Two teams wore metal spikes (all the players wore the same style, so I'm thinking they were purchased by the school or the boosters). Just a few players on the other five teams had purchased their own.

Early Verdict on Cleats

so far so good, a two weeks of scrimmages and early tourney and I haven't seen any blood, ripped pants or a player having to leave the field. One shortstop got kicked near the knee but shook it off. My daughter is playing HS ball and says she loves them, thinks it gives her another step of speed to first. She plays 2nd base so she may have to take the bad with the good, but she already is not looking to having to give them up this summer.
