More - What U Got's

An avid fan sent me these.....Gives you guys/gals something to do, besides
work. Being retired is nice.

1. R1 on 2B, stealing on pitch. SS goes to cover 3B, and SS/R1 collide as both are heading to the base. Catcher's throw goes into LF as R1 gets up and reaches home.

2. R1 at 3B, B1 in the box. Pitcher loses control of her release point and the ball bounces slowly but surely towards home. R1 takes off for home. Catcher moves up to receive pitch and tag out R1. B1 swings as ball approaches plate and bat grazes catcher on the back of the helmet as she's reaching for the ball and tagging R1. R1 is tagged out, with no conclusion as to what happened first (tag or bat contact).

#2, So if the runner is safe before the CO, then you offer the manager the choice of runners at the corners, or a strike on the batter and the runner scoring? Or is the result of the play somehow read differently here.

ASA 8.1-D(4). The result of this play is boilerplate; which happened first is immaterial, because the result starts from the time of the pitch. It isn't possible to legally tag out a runner on a pitch PRIOR to committing catcher obstruction.

With runner on third stealing home (or squeeze play), catcher obstruction award is runner scores, batter on first, any other runner advances only if forced. What option do you think coach can find better than that? CO is only ignored if all that happens anyway.

On catcher's OB the runner advances only if forced with batter being put on 1st. That's where the coach is given the option. result of the play or B1 awarded 1st and runners advanced if force.
this is from memory as my rule book is 15 miles away right now so if I got it wrong can some of you gurus jump in here.

What the catcher did was not "generic" CO. Specifically, the catcher prevented the batter from hitting the ball with a runner on 3rd attempting to steal. This is covered in ASA 8-1-D-4, as stated above, and this rule does not give the coach the option of taking the play.
Quote:
4. (FP) On a swing or attempted bunt, the catcher or any other fielder prevents the batter from hitting the ball, touch the batter or their bat with a runner on third base trying to score by means of a squeeze play or a steal.
EFFECT: The ball is dead. The runner shall be awarded home plate and the batter shall be awarded first base on the obstruction. All other runners shall be advanced one base, if forced.
