Live Ball Appeal

I saw this one between games. 18U Fed Rules.

One out. R1 at first. Batter hits a gapper to left center field. R1 advances to third and BR advances to second.

Defensive coach yells to F3 to stand on first base and for F6 to throw the ball to F3 because the BR missed first base. BR remains standing on second. F6's throw to F3 is high and goes out of play.

What is the ruling on the appeal now? After some responses I'll share with everyone how the circus ended.

The live ball appeal was not executed, so it is not honored. Runners are awarded 2 bases (both to home).

What happened beyond that requires more information.

Dakota has it right, appeal not honored since it was improperly executed and since the ball went out play, runners go home. I can almost smell what happened after the ruling. I'll bet the defensive coach didn't get to see the rest of the game.

I'm not a Fed ump, but I'll take a guess on the proper ruling.

After the live ball appeal was thrown into DBT, the runners would be awarded 2 bases. However, a dead ball appeal would still be possible. Therefore, the runners would have to complete their baserunning responsibilities. In ASA they could do so legally, but I seem to remember that in Fed runners who are on or past the next base cannot return while the ball is dead. In that case, even if they went back and tagged up before taking their award, a dead ball appeal would be honored.

Right?

You're right. The dead ball appeal is still available if the defense has the presence of mind to execute it. That's what I meant by more information was needed.

Thanks for the responses. The circus began when the DC went nuts as the BU awarded both runners two bases scoring two runs. After heated conversations between the DC and the BU and the OC and the PU it was decided that a do-over was in order.

I had to get to my game on another field so that's all I've got.

it was decided that a do-over was in order.

Just what form did this take?

As I was heading off to my game R1 was returning to first base and the same batter that hit the previous gapper was returning to bat. I'm assuming with the same count and number of outs the game continued.

The umpires from this game had left before my game concluded and I did not know either of them as this was an out of town tournament for me.

Ya know, that's really funny after a few glasses of wine. Other than that, OMG, no wonder they left early.
