OK........here's the deal.........
Feel free to comment.......or not....... Just clearing out the cobwebs on this one...........I have already committed.....so no chance on changing my mind.......but, since y'all are my SB/weekend/evening therapists.........I hope y'all don't mind listening. Youngest is playing in BIG Kid-Ball tournament (last of the year for them) Area UIC is desperate for Umpires..........for this Kid-Ball tournament.........I tell him NO........ #1......I have daughter playing....... #2.......I have not got to watch my oldest play in any tournament ball this year and I really want to watch......and had hoped to see her play this weekend.....(OK.......I only missed about 4-5 games between the two and my oldest's Rec team did NOT play any tournaments this year).......but now we are into post-season..........whole different enchillada...... I learn today that I need XXXX money down for oldest's braces for an appointment on Friday ............. sigh..........the only way I can have the XXXX money ......... (without letting some other bills slide) ...... is to umpire in the weekend tournament that my daughter is scheduled to play in. The UIC has assured me that I will never be in a bracket that effects her team........ I have already agreed.........so bowing out now is not an option.............I just wanted to spill my guts a little........ I am NOT scheduled for Friday evening, so I will get to see my oldest's Friday night game. Joel |

Joel,
Just a word of caution. When you start taking umpiring money and using it to cover living expenses you should be aware that you're approaching a decision point wih this - is umpiring something you do for fun exercise and release OR is it a business. When some folks realize that they are now umpiring for income, they change their approach to the games an that can cause a problem. For others, and I think I'm in this group, it's not a problem. Yeah, my approach has changed somewhat because I now look at this as a part-time job, with the income covering some of the normal living expenses.

I am not very familiar with how these girl tournaments are run but maybe you can work it out with the other umps and the UIC to be off at least sometimes when your daughter is playing so you can at least catch some of her games GOOD-LUCK to you and your daughter's team Steve, I believe I too who have 2 childeren at college age now umpire also for the $$$'s but dont believe it changes my approach. I umpire 1st because I enjoy it, 2nd it is good exercise for this 40ish old man and yes but least importance for the $$$'s that do come in handy for paying for some of those extra expenses and a extra golf round every month or so. I do understand your point but only believe it would become a real problem for those that are calling soley for the money and I believe we all know how much Joel loves the game and umpiring so I couldnt ever imagine it being a problem for him JMHO Don |

Don,
Mostly, I agree - for those of us who really are hooked on this game, there's little difference. I used to play fastpitch very well at the men's B level and was not too bad at the A level. I quit playing when I couldn't play anywhere near the level I was used to playing at. Even 15 years later, I still miss playing. But, doing the nearly 300 games annually that I do, it does become somewhat "business-like". And that can change the way we approach the game.
