Down Indicators

So I was running an official's clinic, and one of my officials asked me the question "Why do NFL officials wear a down indicator on each hand?" I didn't know the answer . Is there anyone out here that can explain that to me? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Don't know why the entire crew would use two. When I'm the U, I use one for the down and the other for ball position (hash-post-center-post-hash).

This.

I wear two as U. I've known a few Rs that wear a second one to keep track of the ball position along with me. (Always good to have a backup on everything if you can).

Beyond that... the only thing I can think of is maybe keeping track of timeouts for the team on your sideline or something similar.

I think some use it to keep track of clock status.
