Starting the clock after change of possession
It is my understanding that after change of possession, the clock starts after the "ready for play" signal.
Questions: 1. Is the above statement true...? 2. Is the above statement true only when there is more than 4 or more minutes remaining in the half (when there is less than 4 mins on the clock, the clock then starts on the snap after COP)...? Thanks! REPLY: Coach, the clock starts on the snap when any change of possession during the down results in the ball being awarded to Team B (the defense at the start of the down). Similarly, the clock starts on the snap if the ball goes over to the defense on downs. For your other question, there is no changing of the timing rules based upon time remaining like there is in the NFL.

Bossman; Hmm, my first thought was in your "additional" example clock starts on the snap, since possession has changed, a new series is awarded, and A, (when b recovers the fumble) becomes B... discussion?? Just re-reading the rule and it seems like there is some room for interpretation...maybe not. Also, CoachL (as you probably already know) if A is awarded a 1/10 and the ball remains inbounds on that play that gets them the LTG, then it starts on the RFP. Bossman is correct; position change A-B-A, clock starts on the ready. Last edited by ump33; Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 05:50am. |
