NCAA Extra points

In the MSU/IOWA game, Iowa scored in the final play of regulation to take a two point lead. The clock expired on the play.

The officials ruled that the extra point had to be run before the game was over.

Is this because the score differential was 2 and MSU could have tied the game by returning a missed try, or was it because extra points HAVE to be attempted, not matter what?


Is the rule the same in the NFL?

I think I found the answer:
ARTICLE 2. A try is an opportunity for either team to score one or two

points while the game clock is stopped after a touchdown. It is a special

interval in the game which, for purposes of penalty enforcement only,

includes both a down and the “ready’’ period that precedes it.

a. The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point

touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the

fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s)

would affect the outcome of the game.

From what I remember, the extra point is always attempted in the NFL, unless the touchdown occurs in overtime.

That's based solely on observing games over the years, not on the rule book. So that could be wrong.

Of note: That is the first time I have ever seen a team that takes a two point lead on the final play of the game forced to attempt the try. I'm glad to finally see it, though.

NFL Rule 4, Section 8, Article 2, f:

If a touchdown is made on the last play of a period, the Try attempt shall be made (except during a sudden-death).

I always thought a try could be declined in NFL & Fed, and that NCAA allowed a try to be declined until they introduced 2-way scoring.

It is because the game might be tied by returning the missed try.

See Play #11 in NCAA Football Play Situations Bulletin No 2 issued Sept 15th, 2006

11. On the last play of the fourth period, Team A has scored a touchdown to take a 32-30 lead. Ruling: The try must be "attempted" since Team B could score 2 points. Attempted is defined as running a legal play (8-3-2-a).
