Clock Status?

NFHS Rules please:

2nd and goal from the 5 yard line for team A. Live clock. Team A throws a TD pass and the clock stops with 5 secs. There is a penalty for illegal formation. Team B accepts the penalty. So now it's 2nd and goal from the 10. What's the clock status?

I am gonna have to go with live. A screwed up with a live clock and the flag was at the snap. mark it and chop it and if they are smart they will get the play off.

I gotta go with the snap because the action which caused the down to end was a TD.

When your enforcing a penalty, anytime a play ends in the endzone, the clock starts on the snap.

Although the flag was at the snap, the down continued and ended with a score.

As a general rule, ask yourself what happened during the down to kill the clock. Since the down ended with a score, the clock will wind on the snap.

If there had been a false start penalty, then you'd be right to wind it on the ready.

Ok, read it and now know what the rule says, but that is counter intuitive. A screwed up yet saved themselves by putting it in, seems like this hurts B a little too. Oh well.

There are so many possible situation, multiple fouls, etc. that the rules-makers have to have a general solution to when to start the clock. The general rule references how the ball became dead. It's arbitrary, but sometimes arbitrary is fair (as in a coin toss).

If you read the Redding Guide he talks about major and minor clock stoppers. Major clock stoppers include:

A ball or ball in player possession going OOB
An incomplete pass
B is awarded a new series
Either team is awarded a new series following a legal kick
A score
A fair catch is made
Can't think of any others??? Must be some......

Anyway, if you stop the clock and there are two reasons for stopping the clock (in this case the foul and the score) then the major stopper trumps the minor one and you start on the snap. This is a simplified summary of the Guide but it's a good one to know.
