How do you handle this measurement?
NF rules.
2nd & 8 from A's 37. QB A1 is sacked for a 7 yard loss. After the play, B1 does a little sack-dance over the QB and draws a 15-yard ULC. The 15-yard walkoff would leave A very close to the line-to-gain. How do you properly measure this? It seems to me walking off 15 yards and then measuring is something akin to measuring after the ball, which became dead in a side-zone, is spotted at the inbounds marks. Is it okay to bring the clip back 15 yards and measure to the dead-ball spot and see if A has the yardage necessary for a new series? The only other option I would see is give A the benefit of the doubt and a 1st down because B was being stoopid. |

I have heard of this before. It seems that would be the most accurate way.

Accurate or not, I would not measure on a 15 yard penalty by Team B. I would look to see if I am less or more than 5 yards from the back stake and decide if we have a first down erring towards a first down if it is close. Your HL and U need to be on the same wavelength.

Chalk one up for always spotting a first down on a yard line.
If 1st down was on the 27 then the line to gain is the 37, so if our spot is on or behyond the 22 then we've got a first down. If the 1st down was on the 27.38954 then we may get some confusion. I don't mandate this practice, but I've learned to see the value of it in between the 20s, so I encourage it. |

If you didn't start the series on a yard line, I would either give one team the benefit of the doubt or use the clip method mentioned above. |
