2nd and 10 from A's 35 yardline.
PLAY 1 QB A10 drops back to pass and scrambles, A56 holds B44 at A's 30 yard line. A10 is tackled/sacked at the A's 25 yardline. Where is the holding penalty marked off from? PLAY 2 Same as the above but A10 before being sacked throws an incomplete pass downfield. Where is the holding penalty marked off from? PLAY 3 QB A10 drops back to pass and scrambles, A56 holds B44 at A's 30 yard line. A10 is tackled/sacked at the A's 33 yardline. Where is the holding penalty marked off from? Just staying sharp as we enter the playoff season

The all but one principle says that the only foul enforced from the spot are fouls by the offense behind the basic spot. For a running play the basic spot is the end of the run.
All other penalties are marked off from the basic spot. 10-6. Holding is a spot foul if it occurs behind the end of the run. In essence the all but one says that if the holding occurred at the 25 and the end of the run was the 30 then the 5 yards difference was gained as a result of the hold. 10-4-4 (basic spot is the end of the run) 10-4-6 (all but one) All but one means, in effect, take the worst spot as it affects A. |

Be careful with using the phrase, "Go with what hurts them the most." This isn't always true. I had an example somewhere but it's too early to remember. Check out this thread from a while back: http://www.officialforum.com/thread/20851 I had it wrong until lots of people here corrected me. Hope this helps.
