Penalty Enforcement

Team A is on offense and drops back to pass.

Player B1 is a defensive lineman. On the rush to the QB he pushes up on the Tackles helmet on offensive. What is the penalty and what is the enforcement.

Crew has had conversations.

1. Illegal Use of Hands 10 yards
2. Personal Foul 15 yards. Do you call it Facemask? Signal

FED: Personal foul, facemask. 15 yards enforced under all-but-one.

NCAA: Personal foul, Hands-to-the-face. Penalty enforcement depends on the spot of the foul and the subsequent action during the down.

If it's a push and not a grasp we wouldn't call it a facemask. In NFHS, I usually put this under the generic unnecessary roughness foul. "Incites roughness" is good enough for me.

If it's not severe or prolonged then talk to him the first time. I leave illegal use of the hands alone in this.

It's really just a "Face Mask" foul. In a, it covers "continuous" contact, which this is, and in b, covers grab and twist. No reason to say "hands to the face" since that really isn't accurate nor is it the foul. Plus the term doesn't exist in the NCAA rulebook. THAT alone means little, but since there IS an accurate foul for that, we should use that.

There is also a separate signal for paragraph a, S26, which is labeled "Hands to the Face". Which tells me we should be calling it "hands to the face".

I stand corrected. I was not aware of the new signal. I did a search for the term and that didn't come up.

Thanks for the alert.

Theoretically, yes, but my high school crew operates under the philosophy of "all facemask fouls are 15 yards unless proven otherwise"... based on the idea that it's basically impossible to grasp someone's facemask/helmet opening without twisting/turning it at least a little bit.

If my memory is correct, we've had 6 facemask calls this season... one of which was a 5-yarder. I believe that one was called by the R (and it's his philosophy I was quoting, for what that's worth).
