Punt Play

K punts the ball to the one yard line where K1 recovers and slides into the end zone. The Back Judge marked the ball on the one and told the head coach it's a momentum rule. I have looked at the rule book and have decided that he is correct on the call, but his reasoning is wrong. From the rule on ball becoming dead on a punt - the ball is dead as soon as K recovers, it has nothing to do with momentum. In college this would be a touchback and I wish it would be changed for NFHS ruling.
The ball broke the goal line plane of the Receivers on the slide I believe the position of the result of the slide and the ball still moving towards the goal line it should be ruled a touch back, not downed because of control - K1 may have possessed the ball before the goal line but he slid through the end line.

Actually he had first touching. Momentum only applies to R on scrimmage kicks.

Is that a recent change? NFL's had it like that a long time, but not Fed or NCAA.

NFHS 6-2-4 "Such catch or recovery (of an untouched scrimmage kick by K) beyond the NZ causes the ball to be come dead (See 6-5-6 Exception)" A "Catch" is defined in NFHS 2-4-1. "Recovery" in NFHS 2-36-1.

In the sample play, the instant K1 secured possession in contact with the ground, in-bounds the ball was dead, subsequent sliding would be with a dead ball.

Not the way you described it. If K possesses/recovers a kick at the one, the play is dead and it doesn't matter where he goes from there. It doesn't matter where the player is when he recovers it, either.
