Cleveland Atlanta game, timeout 20 sec. left.

NBA followers,

Did anyone notice last night that the timeout taken by Cleveland with 20 seconds? Cleveland rebounded the ball and the ball was passed forward, still in the backcourt. Cleveland took a timeout and the throw in that followed was in the front court. Should it have not been a backcourt throw in? Did they get it wrong or am I missing something?

Under NBA rules, timeouts taken in the last 2 minutes (I believe) while in the backcourt- teams have the choice of inbounding the ball in the front court at the 28 ft mark in their frontcourt on either the left or right side of the court. Just an NBA rule

NBA: Rule 5. Section VI. g.
If a 20-second timeout is requested by the offensive team during the last two minutes of the fourth period and/or any overtime period and (1) the ball is out-of-bounds in the backcourt (except for a suspension of play), or (2) after securing the ball from a rebound and prior to any advance of the ball, or (3) after the offensive team secures the ball from a change of possession and prior to any advance of the ball, the timeout should be granted. Upon resumption of play, the team granted the timeout shall have the option of putting the ball into play at the 28' hash mark in the frontcourt or at the designated spot out-of-bounds. If the ball is put into play at the hash mark, the ball may be passed into either the frontcourt or backcourt. If it is passed into the backcourt, the team will receive a new 8-second count.

But it was not prior to advance. That's why I'm wondering if they missed it.

It wasn't clear on the broadcast, but Cleveland had two timeouts left and took them both to get the advance. Otherwise there was 18 on the shot clock and the Cavs would have had 3 seconds to get the ball in the front court. You can see the consecutive timeouts in the play by play Here

Time-out was requested prior to the pass, but was not whistled until after the pass.

One of the officials made some sort of indication to let the crew know the time-out was immediate.

That would explain it. Taking the second timeout would allow Them to advance I believe.

Scott Foster is one of my favorite NBA refs. He's a real experienced official who doesn't take any lip and makes crisp calls. I really wish I could meet Scott.

I was wondering about this TO too, but all-in-all it was a great night because both the Cavaliers and Indians won on the same night.

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr.: Do you realize that 99% of the Forum membership has absolutely no idea what you're talking about?
