If he had stayed more to the sideline while A2 while dribbling, he could have stepped down in time to see the in between.

On the advice of a far more successful ref than I, I started clinging to the sideline in Trail unless there was a special circumstance that would need for me to come out on the floor.

I agree with this. He had a poor angle, saw contact but couldn't see the action leading to the contact. Move with a purpose and maximize angles.
