He might have been the Referee. He did not have to be the one that tossed the ball.

If given a choice, I rarely ever do the toss. It is one of the most accident prone areas for a Ref.
It is not that difficult to get concussed, some sections of your head/cranium are softer than others. I saw a partners eyeglasses get broken on face by errant ly tapped jump all.
