Tipped ball - double dribble?

I should probably know this, but had this situation yesterday and wanted opinions.

Ballhandler goes into air to make a pass.
Ball tipped out of his hands.
Ballhandler catches the ball while in the air and returns to the floor.

What do you have?

If the ball was tipped by the defense, I've got nothing.

Thinking for a bit on whether it matters who tipped it.

It doesn't. Just need to be aware of how the feet land to identify the pivot foot.

9-5: Illegal Dribble: A player shall not dribble a second time after his/her first dribble has ended, unless it is after he/she has lost control because of:
ART. 1 A try for field goal.
ART. 2 A touch by an opponent.
ART. 3 A pass or fumble which has then touched, or been touched by,
another player.

Are we discussing dribbling or catching the ball?

The OP makes no mention of a dribble, either before or after the aborted pass.

I believe the real question is "has player control ended due to the tip?" I think the answer is "yes."

I think the answer doesn't matter here. The tip isn't necessary unless the player has previously dribbled and dribbles again.

Since the player jumped in the air to make a pass then he'd have to lose control of the ball before landing, otherwise we'd have a travel.

Is a tip required in order to lose player control?

No, but in the OP it WAS tipped. Hence the question.

Fair enough. I was just expanding the discussion.

That's cool. Your response made it sound otherwise.
