Catch/hop/shoot (Video)

Thoughts on whether this is a travel. Go to around 2:17 in the video. He's catching/hopping/then shooting. Most of them look like travels to me since the catch comes pretty clearly before the hop.

Looks legal to me. I do not agree that the player catches the ball, jumps, and then lands (would be a travel). I think the player jumps just prior to catching the ball (or at least at roughly the same time).

It's close enough that I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the player here.

Edit: I did see one at 2:36 that I would call a travel. It was exagerated enough that it was clear to me that the catch was before the hop.

A lot of those quick hops, especially going backwards, are travels.

Hop travel

Guys,

Called a couple of these catch/hop/shoot in summer ball last week and was talking to my partner and he says he saw them but passed on the calls and recommended I do the same. I did not agree with him because they are travellling. I will pass on the close ones but will continue to call the obvious because they are gaining an advantage when they have control of the ball and then hop.
Your thoughts???

I've called travels on plays like this, but probably not as many as I could have. I would say that if you see them catch-hop (instead of hop-catch)... then you have to call the travel.

It's not an easy call to make unless it's obvious, but it's something we have to look out for because it could lead to an advantage for one team.

I agree with bballgame on the plays at 2:18. Those are travels.

WJC3, did that partner explain why you should pass on those calls?

He said that many officials do no make that call.
As I stated before, I disagreed with him.

So as a result you shouldn't either? I'm sure that logic would go over well with his officiating supervisor.

Pivot foot up + pivot foot down = travel.

I'll let the almost-simultaneous catch/hops go. They're most likely legal...if it's so close that you need slo-mo replay to tell...I'll give the benefit of the doubt.
When I can clearly see a catch first, then hop, I'm calling it. They're travels. It's obvious.

If my partner tells me he's letting them go because most officials don't call them, I'm telling him he needs to work with better officials.

I am seeing a mostly legal move. If it is so close, I am not calling a travel. It looks to me like the catch is while the feet are in the air. But it is so close that it is really hard to tell. It better be executed worse than that to call a travel to me.

Peace

Agreed, he'll probably have me paying close attention after a couple of these.

In several of the plays, he clearly catches the ball with both feet on the ground and then hops. Yes, those are clearly travels and should be called.

I wouldn't be surprised if his supervisor is one of the "many" officials that wouldn't make that call!!??!!
