Case Play

A1 jumps from frontcourt to backcourt to save the ball and prevent a violation. While in the air, A1 taps the ball towards the frontcourt where it ricochets off of B1 (frontcourt status) back into A1’s hands (still in the air), then A1 lands in the backcourt with possession.

A1 still has FC status when s/he catches the ball. BC violation when s/he lands in the BC.

Damn that's unlikely.

What if A1 lands in the BC first?

The interp says one thing, but the rule says another.

Sounded Familiar

Here's a question from our state's exam last year which is similar:

2. A4 is dribbling the ball in the front court near the division line. Defender B5 slaps the ball into the air. The ball crosses the division line into the backcourt where A4 catches it before the ball touches the floor. Which statement is false?

A. This would NOT be a backcourt violation if the ball had touched the floor before being recovered by A4
B. This is NOT a backcourt violation since B5 caused the ball to go into the backcourt
C. This is a backcourt (over-and-back) violation

B would be the correct answer, though they could have phrased the question a heck of a lot better.

Yeah, that's a huge annoyance. I think I missed a question on either the NCAA or NFHS exam this past season because of the difference.

Both B and C are False.

The reason given in statement B is not true. B5 did not cause the ball to go into the backcourt. B5 was the last player to touch the ball while IN THE FRONTCOURT. A4 is the first player to touch the ball IN THE BACKCOURT. So while this is NOT a backcourt violation, the reason provided is incorrect.

C is false because this is not a violation BY RULE.
