Usually, if there is a big discrepancy in the count, there is a fairly obvious reason for it, if one cares to see it. Several years ago, I had a game at the home of a very highly ranked GV team playing a considerably weaker opponent. The good team was up-tempo and pressure all over the court, all the time.

End of the first quarter:

Home 23 Visitors 7
Fouls: Home 7 Visitors 0

Complaints: none

Just tonight, Girls varsity after a flailing action that I caught out of the corner of my eye (and admittedly missed) the coach says "Oh my God, she's killing her down there!"

I respond, "Coach I might've missed one, but I'm watching it now"

Coach: "She might have whiplash! Her father's that chiropractor, you know"

Me: "Well then she should be fine, right?"

Coach laughs it off.

Last night a coach who is notorious for complaining said "their reaching." I said "they sure are Coach." He got agitated and said "well call it then." I said "I can't it isn't illegal." He give me the look of complete disbelief and said "yes it is." I told him to "show me and I'll call it every time." He never did show me.

Along those same lines, Girls JV a couple of weeks ago. Visitors taking an early and commanding lead, but committing the first 7 fouls of the game. Coach's yelling is solely at his players, who are defending with their hands.

Total number of visitors' third-quarter fouls: 0.

Still my favorite story that I wish I could claim credit for saying, but at least I was working the game when it happened:

Coach (after one of his players fouls out in the 2nd period): 5 fouls! 5 fouls in the 1st half! What's that tell you?

Partner (completely deadpan): Tells me your kid can't play defense.
