Heard that one before!

Never to be disappointed...anytime there is a big difference in foul counts the coach whose team has more will say one of the following:

1) You are not calling same game on both ends of the floor

2) You and your partner are not on same page

3) You are letting the other team play more physical.

What else have you heard from coaches?

"CALL IT BOTH WAYS!"

"Sorry, coach - we're not allowed to do that. We are only allowed to call it one way - the right way - and that's what we've been doing. Please don't ask us again to call it the wrong way."

Well, they're not actually saying that, but I can read their minds.

"Call it on both ends!"

"Coach it's 8 to 8 for fouls"

"I don't care about even, I want it called on both ends!"

I don't hear it, and when I do, all the comments sound alike.
Once I hear it, I address it.

Simply saying, "Coach, we're not talking about the foul count" normally works.

Had this happen in a JV girls game the other day.

Inbound from the backcourt endline, I'm new lead. Inbounds pass is tipped and goes out of bounds, and neither my partner or I know who touched it.

Partner eventually rules it as Team B's ball, and I'm not sure why. I go over to him to find out what's going on... he says "White #15 told me she touched it last, so that's what we're going with." Ok, then, fair enough.

A couple plays later, I've got a foul call. I report it, and coach politely asks "how'd the other team get the ball on the inbounds play?"
"Well, coach, your player told us she hit it out of bounds"
(sputtering). "I don't care about that! This isn't about being honest!"

All righty then.

Home coach: "The foul count's seven to one!" Tweet, whack. TF on home coach.
My amigo: "And what is it now?"
I'm not sure I would ever say this in a game, but it made me laugh.

Once, probably about 12 years ago, I had a sophomore coach approach me at half time and say it had been the best officiating he'd seen at that level all year. He was winning.
After the game, he had lost and his team had significantly more fouls than the other team in the second half, he told me it was the worst he'd seen all year.

I learned a lesson that game: get off the court more quickly.

Many years ago, the jr. high coach at the school a mile from my house made the following remark after a close loss: "Nobody will ever call you homer!"
Ten years later, the coach of a jr. high ten miles away declared that it just wasn't fair when I called games at the local school. I wasn't a bad guy, I just simply was not able to be objective so I shouldn't be there. Here's the good part. Coaches change jobs a lot and move from one school to another. It was the same guy who made both statements.
