players spitting on the court

Had this occur numerous times Friday night in a varsity boys game. Players were "spitting" on the court, just as a baseball player would on a ballfield. First time I saw it, I told the player to stop. He used his shoe to clean up his mess. A little later in the game, the head coach of the opposing team starts yelling, "they are spitting on the court". We stop the game and advise the home coach to tell his team to stop spitting on the court. Any thoughts?

Tell them if they spit on the court again, they'll have to lick it up.

On really dusty floors this was sometimes done, back when I played, to improve shoe traction. a bit of spit then use the shoes to wipe it up made a big difference between sliding and cutting.

Tell them that if they must do it, make sure they do it well out of bounds.

Then tell the coach to get one of those sticky mats.

As long as the player(s) wipe up the spit with their shoe, like deecee was saying, then I don't see a problem.

I'm always amazed to see a player lick his hand and then wipe the bottom of his shoe - especially the 2nd and 3rd time during a game EEWWW . . .
