Backcourt Violation?

I would like to get comments on the following situation:

Gammer School 6th Grade Game:

A1 is under his own basket attempting a throw in. Upon throwing the ball into play it is deflected by A2 who tips the ball in the frontcourt. The ball goes into the backcourt where it is grabbed by A2 who then begins dribbling.

Under NFHS rules.....is this a backcourt violation?

No it is not. Ball was not possessed in the FC. A tip or deflection does not establish TC for the purposes of this rule.

Peace

Four Corners ...

The four elements for having a backcourt violation are: there must be team control (and initial player control
when coming from a throw-in); the ball must have achieved frontcourt status; the team in team control must
be the last to touch the ball before it goes into the backcourt; that same team must be the first to touch after
the ball has been in the backcourt.

thanks for posting this. This came up a few years ago in a game I did. Was this always the rule, or was it changed in the past year or two?

I cannot speak for always, this has been the rule my entire career. There was a change in interpretation about a very specific situation, but your situation does not apply to this ruling.

Peace
