Exception or The Rule? (video)

I cant tell from the video if he catches the ball while airborne or not, because if he is taking a hop right before catching the ball, it is a very small one. Therefore, I will go with the calling official (and give him the benefit of doubt that he knows the rule and exception) since he had a much better look as to whether or not the offensive player was airborne on the catch.

This is marginal in my opinion. I can't tell for sure from the video, but I think the kid's airborne when he catches it.

Seems he catches the ball with both feet off the floor. I have no violation.

I want to be certain before making this call and it isn't clear to me that he isn't on the floor when he catches the ball.

No violation. Legal play per the rule cited on page 1. - And I'll add, easy non-violation, if the official isn't allowing himself to get surprised by it and knows the rule, which I would imagine should be the case with Mr. No-Lanyard on a televised game, here.

It may not even be a matter of surprise but a matter of not knowing the intricacies of this rule. There are many who don't.
