Reset Shot Clock

I have had 2 coaches in 4 days say the same thing..so I am just going to ask this...

If there is a held ball and NO change in possession, is the shot clock reset??

Thanks!

Under NCAA rules, no.

NFHS doesn't use a shot clock so HS associations that choose to use a shot clock have to make their own rules or use NCAA rules.

FIBA has the same rule as NCAA; no reset.

NBA has basically the same rule; no reset except if the shot clock is under 5 seconds, they will reset to to 5. Of course in the NBA, they actually still jump.

Depends upon the state using the shot clock and also depends upon the circumstances resulting in the held ball. For example, a ball lodging between the ring and backboard would cause a reset even if the team which just attempted the try had the arrow or if a try is an airball and two opponents simultaneously come down with the rebound some states have the shot clock reset.

That's because the NBA hasn't forgotten that the jump ball is an exciting play!

A lodged balll is not a held ball. Both are one of 6 reasons the AP arrow is used as listed in 7-4-3 (plus the start of quarters 2, 3, and 4)

What mechanic do you use on a lodged ball?

Thumbs up. It's a jump ball situation and it's also the best signal to indicate to everyone what will happen next.

In each area that I've worked that used a shot clock, there is no reset on that play.

The Provisions State ...

Connecticut prep schools use an odd combination of NCAAM, NCAAW, and NFHS rules. These guidelines (below) may not apply anywhere else other than Connecticut:

WHEN TO RESET
Held ball (if DEFENSIVE team has A/P arrow)

WHEN NOT TO RESET
Defensive team causes a HELD BALL, but OFFENSIVE team has A/P arrow
Held ball during a throw-in and OFFENSIVE team has A/P arrow

"stop clock" followed by the direction (and usually an explanation to the table to switch the arrow)

Two thumbs up is one of the three stop clock signals. N'est pas?

One time when you and I differ. I use the thumbs. Saves the explanation.
