Throw In

After a made basket by Team A..B can run the baseline. B attempts a throw in but it is blocked by A and knocked OOB.

Question: Can be still run the baseline on the next throw in?

My answer was NO!..since ball was legally touched by Team A on the block and thus the throw in was completed. I had a fellow ref argue with me that this was not correct but he did not give me a clear reason why.

Thanks!

Your fellow ref needs to get his nose in the Rule and Case Books.

Anytime you hear something from an official that sounds dubious, ask them (respectfully of course) to provide you a rule and case book citation.

The throw-in ended when the ball was legally touched.

Had the ball been kicked, the thrower could still run the end line.

...which is probably where your partner becaame confused. He forgot - or possibly never remembered - the "legally touched" aspect of the rule. Send him a copy of Rule 7-5-7 for his next birthday.

Don't want to confuse the OP on this issue, but if the ball is kicked and we would place the ball on the endline, then they retain the endline running ability.

If the ball is kicked at half court, for an example, then we advance to the violation spot for a designated spot throw in.

I know BktBallRef knows this, but wanted to make sure others knew it as well.

Which is why I said, "Had the ball been kicked, the thrower could still run the end line."

Pretty difficult to run the end line if the succeeding throw-in isn't from the end line.
