Granting a timeout

Let me set the table:
Playoff game 29.2 seconds left in the game, 58-58 is the score, boys 3 man-mechanics.

Team A has been granted a timeout. I'm the C. The ball is at Team A's disposal opposite sideline from the benches.

I have eyes on players and am close to coach because the place is packed and I want to make sure I hear a timeout call. He's at most a step away.

The T bounces ball to Player A1 to begin the throw in. He starts his count. tweet tweet, 5 seconds. "Timeout" coach says...my first instinct is tweet, which I do, but nobody can hear as I was already certain my partner's loud tweet came first.

I turn to the coach and say, my partners whistle came before your timeout coach. He says "how, I'm standing right here next to you". I say, his whistle came first. He says "I understand"

After the game, I talk to my partners and they both said, they would have granted the timeout even if they heard the whistle first.

What say everyone?

This is my first playoff experience. Great game.

If the REQUEST came before the whistle but your whistle was a little slow, then grant the request.

If the request came after the whistle, then tough tootsies.

Someone will probably find some obscure reason why I'm wrong but IMO, too late.

I would have done as you did. Timeout has to be called before 5 seconds expires, and there's no way I'd consider this accomplished if he requests it after my partner's whistle.

Personally, I'd just smile and thank them for the words of advice.

I had a strange timeout situation last night at the end of a 15 point game.

Team that was down 15 in the waning seconds was scrambling in the corner and the ball was loose on the floor. The coach was screaming "time out, time out, time out" and in the middle of this, as the ball was rolling out, the player from the team down 15 grabbed the ball as she was going out of bounds and rolled it back on the floor inbounds before landing out of bounds.

Good enough for me. I granted the timeout.

My partner (since I was administering the throw-in after reporting) ended up taking grief from the winning coach until the first horn. He ignored the statements and when there was finally a question, said, "Obviously Rich had player control or he wouldn't have granted the timeout." Then the coach said, "I know this is a 15-point game but if this was a 2-point game I'd really have something to argue about." Again, no response. I watched the whole thing from a distance. It was the only thing that coach said all night long.

It amazes me how coaches simply can't turn it off. I know I would've shrugged and said, "Big deal, we're up 15 with 6 seconds left in the game."

I'd say it was after the violation/whistle and ask him if he still wants the timeout.

No way in h-e-hockey sticks I'm bailing out a coach like this.

It is about what came first, not which whistle came first. At least that is not how I am calling it. Then again it is sometimes hard to know between two officials that are across the court from each other.
