Yeah, I can see how that would be a bit disconcerting. It'll probably be less so once we get used to it, and as if there's a reason to actually stop the process, he should be hitting his whistle, too.

Or go ahead and put the hand up as soon as he gives you the go-ahead nod.

Yeah whistle for sure. I guess its good to know that with everything else going on can still pay attention to my partner.

Yep, I'd rather have an unnecessary 10 second delay than put the ball in play with subs coming in.

There is a difference. Hand up for partner to wait should be shoulder to head height. Hand up to chop should be straight up.

I can't speak for the NCAAM mechanic but in NCAAW the L has to blow his/her whistle right before the ball is placed at the disposal of the thrower. That whistle is supposed to trigger the T to put his/her hand up to help chop in time. If their hand is up prior to that - to me - it means they don't want me to give the ball to the thrower.
