Why not? Wouldn't this be classified a fumble?

Can fumble-dribble-fumble, correct?

Isnt a fumble done accidentaly? The OP sounds as if the player placed the ball down on purpose. Not saying this is illegal, just that it isnt a fumble.

It's also not a dribble, so I'm not sure what would prevent it provided the player doesn't do something else illegal (such as get up or move the pivot foot) while the ball is on the floor.

I agree... until bob provides some proof, that is.

Assuming a player is on the floor:

Set the ball down, get up, pick up the ball and start dribbling: TRAVEL.

Set the ball down, roll over, pick up the ball and start dribbling: LEGAL.

See case play:

4.44.5 SITUATION B:

A1 dives for a loose ball and slides after gaining control. A1 is in a position either on his/her back or stomach. What can A1 do without *violating?

RULING: A1 may pass, shoot, start a dribble or call a time-out. Once A1 has the ball and is no longer sliding, he/she may not roll over. If flat on his/her back, A1 may sit up without violating. Any attempt to get to the feet is *traveling unless A1 is dribbling. It is also traveling if A1 puts the ball on the floor, then rises and is first to touch the ball. (4-44-5b)

Right, you're agreeing with me.

In my second case, the player does NOT get up.
