I know it was wrong but I did it anyway
Early in the game my partner blow the whistle for a double foul. Only problem it that the other official has not handed the ball to the thrower-in. Thus this is a dead ball foul. (If actually a penalizable foul at all). I say nothing and just continue game with POI.
Begining of 4th quarter. Before I bounce the ball the the thrower-in, this same official calls another dead ball foul. but this is just a single foul. Luckly the foul is on the offensive team (No free throws) I gather with both other officials an explain the situation. I give him 3 choices. 1-Play on as if a normal foul. Tell table/coaches that the arrow will not change and no free throws. 2-Tell table/coaches that the foul is not applicable since the ball was dead and the action was not Intentional. Thus no foul and back the AP throw-in. 3-Tell table/coach that this is a dead ball foul. Thus Technical foul. We went with #1 No one complained and we discussed the play in the locker room at the end of the game. |

Why didn't you say anything? We all have a responsibility to get situationslike this right.

Partner(s) had no idea that there was a difference between live ball and dead ball fouls. The double foul ocured very early in the 1st quarter. He was 'cleaning up the game'. I forgot to discuss the play at half time. I felt it was unique and would not happen again. Game management could have been handled different.

A dead ball foul is a technical foul. Dead ball contact is not a foul at all, unless ruled intentional or flagrant.

I assumed intentional in the OP; otherwise, there would be no whistle. Is there any other reason to foul someone during a dead ball?

That's the point of the whole thread, methinks. They did it "wrong" in the first quarter, and "wrong" again in the 4th.

I Think We've Got Them All Covered ...
And a live ball, noncontact foul, is a technical foul.
