Talking to the V coach of a freshman boys game the other night, I was told of a previous game situation he'd encountered. Players played wrong direction for 3 minutes of 4th quarter before it was discovered. During the three minutes, Team V scored one basket, and H none. Dead ball, officials discover error. Decide to take V's points away and award them to H, since the basket scored went into H's hoop.
I almost swallowed my whistle.

Snaqwells,
Oh, well.
Yes, it is the officials' responsibility.
No, we do not expect a freshmen coach to know the rule.
But, for the grace of God....

By almost swallowing your whistle, you demonstrated how much smarter you are than those other officials.

Thumbs up

But hopefully you weren't too critical in front of the coach.

No, I wasn't critical at all. I just told him that was interesting. He didn't ask me the rule, and I didn't volunteer it for him. I specifically avoided making the other official look bad.

I believe that is a correctable error and no points should be taken away, just the ball put in the right direction. I would have swollled my whistle too!

It is not one of the 5 correctible errors listed in the book under R2-10-1. If it was a correctible error, there would be restraints involved as to how long you had to correct it- R2-10-2. It is an official's mistake, and R4-5-4 tells you how to handle it.
