Inadvertent Whistle??
Saw this tonight. Home team up by 5 with about 2 minutes left. Visitor makes a shot to cut lead to 3. After the basket by V, "tweet", timeout. Neither V nor H requested the timeout. V's coach made a hand gesture that was mistakenly judged to be a request for TO. Inadvertent whistle or charge the TO to V?

If the official made a mistake, it's an accidental whistle.
If the coach made a mistake, it's a timeout.

Inadvertent whistle.
I think it was the 2nd camp that I'd ever attended. U18 game, two amazing teams. My P and I are doing well, and I grant a timeout late in the game. The coach goes a bit nuts and he and I sort it out. He yelled for a play to be run called "five out". lol

Inadvertant Whistle
Case Book 5.8.3 E (b) POI
In this Case Book play, it is referred to as "an accidental whistle."

I have the 2010-2011 Case Book which refers to it as an "inadvertent" whistle. Sorry, looks like I need to get the latest and greatest. Inadvertent/accidental was my thought also. I spoke to the crew doing the game after the fact and they said that the TO had been granted so it had to be administered.

By rule, if a timeout is requested and granted, then it has to be administered. If there's no request, then the official screwed the pooch and it shouldn't be charged. ![]()

Same for 4.36.1 in the Rule Book. |

Perhaps, in the thoughts of some writers/editors of rules statements, an "inadvertant whistle" applies to violations, and/or fouls, whereas an"accidental whistle" would apply to the stopping of play to grant a request for a timeout, or other non-violation/foul situations.
