Those of us who do it, and I'm occasionally guilty of this, will most often do it when a player drives to the basket, travels, and the ball goes in the basket. i used t play sax, still do occasionally, and stiffler's correct, its all tongue action. also prevents inadvertents.

Trombone here....start AND stop the airflow with the tough. It will sound MUCH better.

I never played a musical instrument but that I what I've learned to do and it produces a nice, confident tone.
