Technical for Wrong Shooter
4th - 6th grade basketball game, two man crew.
White 15 gets fouled on the shot and will get 2 shots. Somehow though White 13 ends up on the line. He attempts 1 shot then the official (a HS official) comes in with a Player Technical on White 13 for attempting 1 free throw that was suppose to be for White 15. Now here is my question: Given that the rulebook does addess this it clearly states "knowingly" for it resulting in a Player Technical. Would it be better to take the path of least resistance and just apply the Correctable Error rule and give White 15 his orginial 2 shots and cancel the 1 made by White 13??? Thanks |

If you're going to call a technical foul, you better damn well sure it was done on purpose. I have a hard time seeing that at the freakin' 4th-6th grade level.
Correct the error and move on.

Agreed.

Sounds like you are leaning towards a common sense approach.
Lean on!

He should have called a flagrent technical, tossed the kid and his coach, gone into the stands and slapped the kid's momma.
Or....... Use the correctable error situation and fix it in about 2 seconds.

Had one of these during the season. But it was caught during the interim between FTs. Opponents claimed the wrong guy was on the line. I had asked for the ball from a different player than the one who went to the line. The calling official could not remember who got fouled and he was the only one in position to see who got fouled. The shooter told a teammate "I don't think they will take that one away" and the new C heard it. We got the players from both teams together and told them about the intentional deceit. We wiped out the FT and had the correct shooter go to the line. And we informed both coaches. No T, but a lesson learned.

Huh? Why am I the source of your sig line? That passage is straight from the rules book.
"The backboards shall be the same at both ends of the court. The backboard shall be one of three types: (1) a rectangle 6 feet horizontally and 4 feet vertically; or (2) a rectangle 6 feet horizontally and 3 1/2 feet vertically; or (3) a fan-shaped backboard, 54-inches wide and with dimensions as shown in Figure 1-2."--nevadaref |

There are, unfortunately, coaches at the fourth to sixth grade levels who fancy themselves as big-time strategists and try to emulate the big mouths of the NCAA or NBA. They consider themselves brilliant for yelling at officials because "it's about the next call" and similar nonsense.
I have no doubt that there are grade-school coaches out there who would tell the wrong kid to go to the line to get a better shooter. Moreover, if the shooter wasn't near the play that was whistled, the coach has the sporting obligation, in a grade school game especially, to get the right shooter on the line. It may be a correctable error, but it is not necessarily so. |
