FTs with no time on clock

End of the 4th quarter, score is tied & player was fouled. Officials put player on the line for a two-shot foul with no time on the clock.

They clear the FT lane. Player makes first FT and celebration begins.

By rule, do you have to shoot the second FT? And can the lane be occupied of opposing team wants to stand there?

Did the horn ending the fourth period sound?

If yes: No players are allowed on the lane lines because the ball will become dead after the last free throw. Also, no need to take the second free throw. The game is over.

If no: (After checking that the automatic horn is indeed on) Players are allowed on the lane lines, since the ball will become alive after the last free throw. In fact, two defensive players must be on the two lower marked lane spaces. The second shot must be taken, because the game isn't over until the horn ending the fourth period sounds.

Thanks. I have seen situations where the outcome is certainly decided and a foul was committed with horn sounded and a player allowed to shoot FTS.

Another question: what would you say to the other team's coach about this situation when they ask how can you shoot FTs with no time on the clock and he requests to put time back on the clock?

"The foul occurred before the horn or at the horn"

"No."

Then the officials were wrong.

Rule 5-6-2 Excp 3.

(This is another of those "other official don't believe me, so I post it here for them to read" scenarios, right?)

Why Bob? Why?

And I never said other officials. People in general.

What did I ever do to you?

I don't think bob meant any malice by his comment.

It was a serious question.

Why do you think everytime I respond to one of your posts, I mean something besides what I say / ask?

The only way to shoot the 2nd shot is if before leaving the visual confines of the playing area, that same team is issued a technical foul.
