Stuffed myself over holiday weekend with feeder/travel tourney games. Been awhile since I've had so many jackass coaches in a short time frame. All about them, rather than using a situation for a teaching moment, an obvious, dumb foul is applauded as good defense.

But we already know this don't we?

Plenty of Frank Martin impersonators the last few days.

I've had a few of those lately too.

I gotta think in some cases, coaches saying "good defense" is their way to tell me they disagree with my call, because there's no way that that many coaches are that dumb.

Most of the time, your statement is probably correct. But I think there are some situations where it can be a good defensive tactic to foul a player rather then letting them have an easy layup; if the player is a bad free-throw shooter, it might be better to foul that player and take your chances that he/she will miss the free throws.

Of course, in my mind, when I hear the "good defense" line from a coach, my mental response is along the lines of "sure, that's good defense, if you want your kids to foul out"

Agreed.

Another time where a foul is good defense is when you're winning by just a few points, and you have fouls to give, and time is winding down. I get a few of these every season. The inbounds process takes more than running the offense.

And sometimes, agressive defense that risks a foul is considered good defense, too. Although I will agree that typically, the comment from a coach is simply his way of saying he thinks we got the call wrong.

It was strictly a veiled comment on my call. Dumb foul and at wrong time.

Yeah, I forgot to add, we can usually tell the difference.

Plenty of "why was that a foul/travel/charge" said in a bellicose voice in a tiny gym when I'm opposite side from one coach who looked like a drunken sot with a four day growth. Thought I heard an f-bomb in huddle with 7th graders, wasn't sure...........Oh, for better hearing.
