Most of the time, your statement is probably correct. But I think there are some situations where it can be a good defensive tactic to foul a player rather then letting them have an easy layup; if the player is a bad free-throw shooter, it might be better to foul that player and take your chances that he/she will miss the free throws.

Of course, in my mind, when I hear the "good defense" line from a coach, my mental response is along the lines of "sure, that's good defense, if you want your kids to foul out"
