Here's a first. What would you call.

Had a girl's 6th grade game. Loose ball, she doesn't grab it or kick it. She puts her foot on top of ball and stops it like a soccer ball. Not sure there is anything in the rule book for that. My partner and I looked at each with a smile and wondered, is that legal?

Violation. Any intentional contact with the leg or foot is considered a kick.

Kick ball

She doesn't?

Do you and your partner read the NFHS books?

Rule 4, SECTION 29 KICKING THE BALL
Kicking the ball is intentionally striking it with any part of the leg or foot.

KICKING THE BALL
4.29 SITUATION: During A1's attempt to pass to A2, B1 (a) intentionally uses
his/her thigh to deflect the pass
; (b) intentionally kicks the ball with his/her foot;
or (c) has the ball accidentally hit his/her lower leg. RULING: In (a) and (b), there
is a kicking violation
and Team A will receive the ball out of bounds nearest the
violation. In (c), the ball remains live and there is no violation. (9-4)

You don't need to know word for word...you don't use your feet/legs to play the ball.

The likely cause for a misunderstanding is that most people associate a kick with projecting the ball with a foot.

NV provided the textbook definition, but sometimes elements like "stopping a rolling ball with a foot" is forgotten to meet the criteria of a kicked ball.

In this way, basketball and soccer are opposites.

Simply put, was the ball intentionally played with the leg? If so, violation.

Another case: Loose ball. A-1 is sitting on the floor, and the ball bounces to him. A-1 squeezes the ball between his legs to secure it. This is also a violation.

And, you should tell A1 and the ball to get a room.

Yep, and he's equally condescending to anyone who makes a mistake. He's an equal opportunity condescender.

Ah the joy of middle school ball. If it can happen, it's probably going to happen there.
