To call a technical foul he first stops the clock with an open hand, and then follows with the "T" signal. Here we stop the clock with the closed fist foul signal and then follow with the "T" signal.

Comments from other parts of the country?
I've personally have never seen anyone use a preceding signal before using the jump ball signal. Always just straight to the jump ball signal.

As far as technical fouls go, I've also never seen anyone go with the foul signal before a technical foul. It's either a stop clock signal or straight to the "T".

Agree. In the real world I've seen almost all officials in my local area go straight to the "T" signal, including probably me. I can't be sure about myself because whenever I give technical foul, which is seldom, I'm usually pretty pissed off, and emotions take precedent over remembering what I've done, and, of course, if I've done it correctly.

But according to the book, by the numbers, for the purpose of a test, or an evaluation, I believe that we're always supposed to stop the clock with a signal first. Since a technical foul is indeed, a foul, then we should stop the clock first with a closed fist.

After all, if we don't signal to stop the clock with an open fist signal (violation), closed fist signal (foul), or thumbs up signal (held ball), then the clock operator won't know when to stop the clock, the clock would keep running, and our crew would be out of there in record time. Of course this would mean more time after the game to consume adult beverages. Hey. Wait a minute. I think I'm onto something here?

While not "T" happy, I certainly give my share. As I've been taught, I try to stay emotionless and take care of bidness. After all, it's just another foul, right?

That being said, I go right to the "T", with no fist in the air. I know it's not "by the book" as you state, but, I've never had an issue.....so far.

Obviously, this isn't me. OK - when I give one while the clock is running, I give the stop clock signal first. When I give one while the clock isn't running, of course I just give the WHACK signal.

BTW - this is how I get the most exercise.
