Interesting that the district, essentially, forces the breaking of a rule in order to facilitate their own appearance standard. Not that I have a problem with it, but did the districts come out and state it is ok to wear sleeves for cosmetic reasons?

Hopefully a change

Even though I haven't got a problem w/enforcing the rules on uniform, I sure am tired of being a fashion cop. Yes, it does look better if the shirt is tucked in, and the shorts are pulled up(just say no to crack).

But when it comes to hair restraints (girl's ball) vs. headbands and having to distinguish between them, not to mention them having to be one color, the main color of the body of the uniform, or neutral (pre-wrap), AND that eveyone has to be wearing the same color band...well, you get my point. We spend an inordinate amt. of time worrying about such a minor element that all but the most ignorant of coaches is aware of but doesn't care about.

For my part, I couldn't care less what color it is, just so long as there isn't any metal.

This is one part of the rules that I am sure no official would mind seeing being eliminated.

Got my NF publications catalog and order form in the mail yesterday. It says the 2010-2011 basketball publications, including rule and case books, will be shipped in July. I guess that means any rule changes have to be completed no later than early June in order to meet that date.

Nobody enjoys enforcing them, but it comes with the territory. It really comes down to the board or person that hires you for the job. If he/she/they want it enforced, you enforce it.

Case in point: I was asked to work a freshman scrimmage this year. On the floor, there was a mix between regular uniforms and practice jerseys. The practice jerseys were never tucked in (those kids didn't even try), but whereas it was a scrimmage, I let it go. Meanwhile, the kids with game jerseys were habitually tucking them in all game. Even if I wanted to find a untucked game jersey, I couldn't, because our enforcement of that rule clearly leads to compliance.

Our IAABO board intstructs us to enforce all NFHS uniform rules for high schools and middle schools. Meanwhile, there's another smaller crew of officials here locally that officiates middle school games, and it becomes problematic when that group applies selective enforcement, as teams become unaware or apathetic about the uniform rules. Again, I don't feel that strongly about these rules either way, but how I feel is irrelevant. If he who hires me expects me to enforce them, I do my job. I sometimes wish others would do the same.

I think I have a crush on Mary Struckoff. Point of emphasis indeed.
