They stopped the game and threw me a ceremony when I tossed my 1000th coach. Wish I had it on video.

I dont understand this "Its all for the kids nonsense" I think that really ended many moons ago. In fact I think the kids are the farthest thing this is for.

I think a part of the reason we do this is "for the kids". It's fun watching kids develop their games over the years. I'm officiating kids that are playing 8th grade ball since they were 8 years old in 3rd grade when I was a rookie. Kinda cool.

Other reasons why I officiate (in no particular order):

- excercise
- money
- love being around the game
- fraternity
- addicted to improving

I think you make a good point here. A lot of parents I see think it's definitely for them - unfortunately.

I recently had my 1,000 beer at lunch prior to 1,000 7:30 tipoffs.

Why did you do that? Had you just won a gold medal?

This was a single season milestone, right?

Stuck On 999 ???

Team A is playing it's last game of the season. It didn't have enough wins to make either the conference, or state, tournament, so this is their last game of the season, win, or lose. Senior captain A1 needs twenty-one points to score 1000 points in his high school career, and both the officials, and the Team B head coach are informed that a ceremony will take place when that milestone is reached, at which time Team A will use one of their timeouts to stop the game. Both coaches and the officials agree to this. Team A is losing by fifteen points with seconds to play in the fourth period. A1 now has eighteen points in the game. A1 drives down the lane, gets fouled in the act of shooting, releases the ball, and with the ball in flight, the buzzer sounds to end the game. The ball goes in the basket. Team B now leads by thirteen points. Lead official sounds his whistle for the foul a fraction of a second after the final buzzer sounds. A1 now has 999 career points.

NFHS 5-6: Each quarter or extra period ends when the signal illuminates or sounds indicating time has expired. EXCEPTIONS: 3. No free throw(s) shall be attempted after time has expired for the fourth quarter or any extra period, unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.

What's an official to do?

Wonder how many FTs A1 missed during the season.

The horn sounds and she is recognized. the entire episode takes about 1 minute after which we resume play. No problem so far
About 8 minutes into the second half team B's coach asks for, and is granted a time out. an assistant asks the scorer how many time outs the other team has. He thought Team A should have been charged with a time out for the 1000 point ceremony. I said no, they would not be charged a time out because that is not something we had talked about before the game. Anyone else had this situation? What have you done?
No way A is charged a TO for this.

It sounds to me that the B HC didn't keep the B AC in the loop. The B AC also should be going through his HC for things like this.

What would you do in this situation?

A1 needs 5 points for 1,000 in her career. With 25 seconds left in a tie game, she scores her 5th point to give her team the lead by two. Say Team B has no timeouts left. Are you stopping the game then?
What did the coach agree to?

Probably did the same on your 1,000th game, too. "Mr. Mark Padgett has not allowed a game to go to overtime in his entire career folks - that's 32,000 playing minutes."
