Mouth guards used to be required by MIAA but the policy was changed. Mouth guards were blamed for a lot of the player's getting sick. Dirty hands touching the mouth guard and then back in the mouth.

Now, in the MIAA mouth guards are 'recommended' not sure of the exact dates but for awhile mouth guards were 'required' by the MIAA.
