I use one of these every day at the gym. Stretching my calves helps with shin splints.

If you have a running specialty store near you, or if not, go online, and get yourself a pair of support/running compression socks. I use them for distance runs (half marathon, etc) and have used them during the season when my lower legs have felt tight. Well worth the investment.
